It is not a festival but a fasting day observed by women to pay respect & gratitude to Sapta Rishi or seven sages who devoted their life for the welfare of the society. These Seven Sages are Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadhvaj, Vishvamitra, Gauthama, Jamadagni & Vashishta. On Rishi Panchami day, women observe fasting for purification. In Hinduism, Purification has highest priority and there are guidelines to maintain it. During the menstrual cycle, women are not allowed to do any religious functions and also not allowed to enter in kitchen. Thus, to avoid such guidelines ,women are observing the fast.
