Remembering Pandit Nehru on his Birth Anniversary
Whenever I read the
biography of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, I am reminded of the words of Gautam
Buddha: “Nothing should be accepted without questioning.” These words always
echo in my mind while reading about Nehru, because he strongly advocated
scientific temper and independent, critical thinking.
Being a rationalist, a humanist, and a champion of scientific enquiry, Nehru
consistently rejected blind faith and rigid religious dogma. According to him,
every religion and culture has its own limitations, and their values do not
represent permanent or absolute truths. He believed that we must adopt a
scientific approach—examining the ideals within each tradition and accepting
only what stands the test of reason.
Nehru also said that even if God exists, it is not right to depend entirely on
Him. For him, divinity resided within every human being. If we reject humanity,
he believed, the world loses its meaning. Therefore, he urged Indian society to
rely on scientific understanding and rational examination before accepting
anything. Only such an approach, he felt, could build a capable and modern
India.
On his birth anniversary, we offer humble tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru,
who laid the foundations of Modern India by championing scientific temper and
independent thought.
