Navrang –Golden Jubilee Musical Film of 1959
Producer, director and actor, V Shantaram was seriously injured at the time of shooting bull-fight sequence in the climax of film Do Aankhen Barah Haat and became blind for some time. Later on, he recovered and gained his eyesight. During his blindness, he started visualized different colours and idea of film Navrang means Nine Colours had been born where every colour denotes various rasas or emotions. This was very hit film celebrated golden jubilee hit. Before making this film, V Shantaram made two successful socially relevant films like Do Aankhen Barah Haat (1957) and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje.

This is the story of struggling poet Diwakar who was disheartened by his wife who performs only domestic duties by looking after his father and sister. He wants her to be more indulging of his fantasies but she thinks that it is shameless to dress up in colourful clothes and also do the Shringaar for her husband. Therefore, he started daydreaming about a beautiful woman, Mohini, enchantress with Jamna’s face while describing her virtues. Mohini becomes his muse and this leads him profession poet by becoming Raj Kavi. But his wife confused and unable to cope up with his fantasy and left him by thinking he is in love with someone else. At last she came to know his fantasy and also understood that a woman can be glamorous even while she cooks delicious food for family. Man does not want more than that.
In the film role of Diwakar has been played by Mahipal and Jamna by Sandhya, Film has been penned with beautiful songs by Bharat Vyas and music was beautifully composed by C Ramchandra whereas story was written by G D Madgulkar. Film starts with patriotic songs like Na Raja Rahega Na Rani, Shaymal Shaymal Baran, Yeh Mati Sabhi Ki Kahani. We have seen best choreography done by Shaam at the time of song Aadha hai Chnadrama rath aadhi  and Arre Jare Hat Natkhat (Holi song). Tyagraj Pendharkar has done fantastic Cinematography at the time of songs Tu Chupi hai kahan  and Kaari Kaari Kaari Andhiyari. Singers Asha Bhosale , Manna De and Mahendra Kapoor have given their best. This was a debut  film of Mahendra Kapoor as a singer.
Earlier, V Shantaram wanted to make this film in Marathi with Arun Sanaik and Sandhya. Later on, he decided to make it in Hindi. This entire film was shot in Rajkaml studio. This is amazing classic film and can be enjoyed today also. Do not miss to watch again.
