*Jana Gana Mana and Vande Mataram*
*Jana Gana*
It is always being said that our National Anthem was written & composed
to welcome Pancham George. At the time of reading about Gurudev Rabindranath
Tagore, I found the conversation between Gurudev & Pandit Jawahar
Nehru where Gurudev told him that at the time of composing Jana Gana Mana,
Pancham (fifth) George was not in his mind & it was bigger Vidhata had
taken hold of him and Song came into being. Thus, this song was Yugapat Jatiya
Sangeet or Bhagwat Sangeet which was combined with Bhakti which is reflected in
the song. In original text of Jana Gana Mana, there was a line Jay jay
Jay he Rajeshwar, Bharat Bhagya Vidhata which was thrown out for
obvious reasons.
*From Yogesh Gogwekar*
It was a dream of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to consider this song as a
National Anthem & started singing in every meeting of Indian National Army.
Ram Singh who was Captain of INA had composed a proper tune of Jana Gana Mana.
Ram Singh had given perfect musical punch to build up musical climax to match
the emotional content and finally he located it in the triad of words Jay he at
the end by finding out desired places in piano. Ram sing had done this after
spending many sleepless nights. When it was listened by Netaji, he
appreciated the perfect work of Ram sing.
*Vande Mataram*
Vande Mataram was first poem to become the National Anthem of
India.Bankimchandra Chatterjee wrote this song in November 1875 in the state
revelation. He created the image of Mother India in the poem. It was first
published in the Bengali magazine Bangadarshan as page-filter. In 1882,
Bankimchandra included this poem in his novel Anandmath & poem got wider
recognisation.
Musically speaking it has negotiated an interesting journey. This
poem was initially sung by Gopalchandra Dhar from Hugli. In the year 1896, it
was sung by Rabindranath Tagore in the open session of Indian National
Congress. Jyotirindrnath Tagore provided Piano accompaniment; but same became
more popular from 1905 onwards when India rose up against the partition of
Bengal.
Vande Mataram has been set to many different Tunes & sung in many
varied by different persons.
Following are some examples.
*Gurudev Tagore sung in Raga Desh-Malhar*
*Krishnarao Phulambrikar sung in Raga Jhinjhoti*
*Pt.Omkarnath Thakur & Pt. Dighamber Paluskar in Raga Kafi*
*Music Director Hemant Kumar composed to tune as chorus song with the
flavour of filmic & dramatic atmosphere. He sang it with Lata. Mangeshkar *
* For AIR, Pt.Ravishankar set the tune in Raga Desh*
