A
memorable incidence at the time of shooting a song " Taareef Karoon Kya Uski " from
film Kashmir Ki Kali made in 1964.
Shammi Kapoor was always being called as a game
changer in Golden Era of Bollywood. He developed his own style, Films like
Tumsa Nahi Dekha made in 1957 & Dil Dekhe Dekho made in 1959 have given him
break through and helped him to
establish a gregarious personality. He
has done this with the help of
Play back singer Mohammed Rafi.
From Yogesh Gogwekar.
Mohammed Rafi sang nearly 200 songs for
Shammi Kapoor. I do not think whether he sang so many songs to any other
actors. Rafi has developed a great Chemistry with Shammi Kapoor by adapting his
voice with the reflection of his unique style of acting. Shammi Kapoor
justified the same by emoting, dancing and wooing with his leading ladies in
perfect manner. It has been observed many times that Shammi Kapoor himself used
to play an active role in creating, conceptualizing and recording his song and
to understand this the song " Taareef Karoon Kya Uski " is best
example.
The song " Taareef Karoon Kya Uski
" is from film Kashmir Ki Kali which was made in1964 and was picturised on
Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore. This song was penned by S H Bihari, music
composed by O P Nayyar and song sung by Mohammed Rafi. The great job of team
spirit made this song successful. The noteworthy of this song is word ‘ Tarref
‘ means praise which has vocalist expression and requires different treatment
every time at the time of pronouncing. At the time of listening the song before
shooting, Shammi Kapoor had a sudden thought and asked Rafi to repeat the last
line “Taareef Karoon Kya Uski “seven to eight times in growing crescendo which
he wanted to play in exact way in the film. Rafi agreed but O P Nayyar said no
and thought it would get boring, but Shammi insisted to have it.
After seeing disappointment of Shammi, Rafi
told Nayyar,” What is your problem? You are composer, I am singer but he is
going to act it out. If he wants in that way, why do you object? If you do not
like it, cut it later. Why reject his suggestion at this stage? He must have
thought of something that neither of us knows and song was recorded as per the
suggestion given by Shammi Kapoor. After it was picturized and received
tremendous acknowledgment, O P Nayyar admitted his mistake and Shammi Kapoor
gave full credit to Rafi as he rendered it exactly in the way actor wanted.
Later on Shammi Kapoor said that he would
be incomplete without Mohammed Rafi. He further said that the Macmillan
dictionary defines a playback singer as a singer who sings the songs in Indian
films, which actors pretend to sing. I would like to add to this definition-a
playback singer is the one who not only sings but creates the on-screen aura
with his voice. The untamed voice of Rafi Sahab could go Junglee (boisterous)
& then he could discipline his voice to sing "O Duniya Ke Rakhawale".
